CARE Project in the Pacific Northwest

Mission

Sharing the love of Jesus in practical ways with our neighbors in the Pacific Northwest through community development and engagement projects.

Description

Originating in the Pacific Northwest, the CARE Project is coordinated out of the Center for Humanitarian Engagement (CHE) at Walla Walla Universitywith partial funding from Adventist Community Services (ACS)at the North American Division of Seventh-day Adventists, with oversight from the North Pacific Union Conference ACS. The CARE Project has a vision to increase involvement of young people in community service through a comprehensive, assessment-based engagement plan, supported by a small team of CARE Student Missionaries (SMs) and resident expert partners.

This project encourages students to bring theirunique backgrounds, interests, and fields of study to partner with the local work of Adventist Community Service centers. CARE Student Missionaries will learn best practices for community development and gain hands-onexperience, working closely with passionate professionals, volunteers, and community partners. Length of service options are 3, 6, or 9 months.

For the 2023-24 school year, project site opportunities include:

  • Bonners Ferry, Idaho
  • Portland, Oregon
  • Everson, Washington
  • Spokane, Washington

Opportunities to serve include the following areas:

  • Business and marketing
  • Community garden
  • Education
  • Radio station audio engineer
  • Social media
  • Social work

Position Description

Student Missionaries in this programwill be paired with another SM with complimentary skills, and a grouptraining will be provided.

For the 2023-24 school year, project sites include:

  • refugee assistance (Spokane)
  • homelessness (Spokane, Portland)
  • food insecurity (Everson)
  • community garden (Everson)
  • vulnerable youth and/or elderly (Spokane)
  • education
  • strengthening partnerships in local community (Portland and others)
  • 5-year business plans or long-term strategies (Portland)
  • PR, design, communications, social media (Portland)

More Info

Must have completed at least one year of college. Valid driver’s license and vehicle highly recommended.

CARE SMs need to:

  • be committed to growing in their faith and relationship with Jesus
  • be willing to learn
  • be self-starters
  • have project management skills
  • have good attention to detail
  • be willing to work with all kinds of people, from church members to vulnerablecommunity members
  • be ready to lead in various ways, such as making appointments, leading discussions or focus groups,etc.

Mountains, lakes, beaches, and/or urban centers may all be within a few hours drive or less.
