Apply for a Direct Parent PLUS Loan

Parent Loan for Undergraduate Students

To apply for a Direct PLUS loan for your student attending Walla Walla University, apply online at StudentAid.gov.

You will need an FSA ID to log in. You can use the same FSA ID you used to sign your student's FAFSA. If you don't have an FSA ID, apply for one online at StudentAid.gov.

Once you are logged in, you will complete the Direct PLUS loan promissory note and credit check. Walla Walla University will be notified of the results and process the loan for your student.

Funds are applied to the student's account one third per quarter. You will be notified by mail when the funds have posted to the student's account.

PLUS Loan Information

What is a Direct PLUS Loan?

It is a loan for parents of dependent students. The interest is fixed at 8.05% for disbursed loans on or after July 1, 2023 and before July 1, 2024. There is also a loan fee that is a percentage of the loan amount and is proportionately deducted from each loan disbursement of 4.228% (Disbursements made on or after October 1, 2023 and before October 1, 2024). Interest payments may be tax deductible.

Who Can Apply for a Direct PLUS Loan?

Since this loan is not based on financial need, parents at all income levels may apply. Borrowers must have no derogatory credit within the last 5 years.

How do I Apply for a Direct PLUS Loan?

To apply for instant pre-approval on the PLUS loan, parents should log intoStudentAid.gov and complete a promissory note andcredit check. Student Financial Services will be notified of the credit decision and process the loan for the student.

Borrowers without internet access should contact the Student Loan Office at (800) 656-2333 for a paper application.

When Will the Money be Received?

For most borrowers, one third of the loan will be credited to the student's account each quarter. If the PLUS loan results in a credit balance, excess funds can be returned to the parent or to the student with the parent's permission. Contact Student Accounts for more information on this process.

Do I Have to Reapply Every Year?

Yes. Since the PLUS loan is based on credit, a new credit check must be done each year. With the Master Promissory Note (MPN), however your promissory note will renew for the following year, up to 10 years, and you will not need to complete a new promissory note except in the event you have an additional child starting college; each Direct PLUS loan MPNis for one student only.

What if I am Turned Down for the PLUS Loan?

In the event a PLUS loan is denied, the student may borrow additional funds through the Unsubsidized Direct Loan Program. Freshman and Sophomores are allowed to borrow $4,000; Juniors and Seniors may borrow $5,000.
